Chromite Ore

The mineral Fe 2+ [Cr 2 3+]O 4 2− is ferrimagnetic with a very low Curie temperature of 100–120 K for terrestrial chromites [19]. The transition temperature changes with substitution of the iron and chromium in the chromite. Above the Curie temperature, chromite is paramagnetic. Pure chromium oxides (Cr 2 O 3 and CrO 2) are ferromagnetic.

Extraction of Chromium from Chromite Ore

 · The average grade of the metallurgical chromite ore was 43.4 pct Cr2O3, with 52 pct of the ore having a chromium-to-iron ratio of 3:1 or over, 17.6 pct having a ratio between 2:1 and 3:1, and 30.4 pct having a ratio less than 2:1. Chemical-grade chromite ore generally ranged from 40 to 46 pct Cr2O3 with a chromium-to-iron ratio of 1.5:1 to 2:1.

Mineralization

Mineralization is defined as the conversion of biomass to gaseous form, water, salts, and minerals, and residual biomass. Mineralization is complete when all the solid carbon are converted to carbon dioxide and water, and methane resulting from aerobic or anaerobic degradation process, respectively (Vert et al., 2012; Sen and Raut, 2015 ).

Chromium in Environment, Its Toxic Effect from Chromite ...

 · Chromium has long been recognized as a toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic metal. It is toxic to microorganism, plants, animals and humans. Chromium exists in environment in two stable forms: Cr(VI) and Cr(III). Cr(III) is less toxic and insoluble, while Cr(VI) is extremely toxic and highly soluble. Chromium is used in many industrial applications, but it poses a threat to local environment.
